I’m a hooker
I’ve dabbled with granny squares and decorative flowers. I’ve made a heavy weight simple blanket which I was quite proud of. But I’d never crocheted anything for myself to wear – until now. I looked back briefly and realised I’d mentioned the start of this coral top early in June, a project just started. Since then I’ve unhooked (do you say ripped as you do with knitting or unhooked?) twice totally, patient this time rather than frustrated and hot tempered. I loved the way the bamboo/cotton yarn handled, the rhythm of a hook and the way it grew quickly. However, the construction of four squares onto shoulder straps didn’t make sense on paper, probably my fault not the pattern designers. Obviously reading a crochet pattern is a challenge to be overcome, especially US vs UK terms.
So, I decided to ‘design’ a loose t-shirt style top instead . Two squares joined at the shoulder and side seams with a border around the bottom. I’m very happy with how it turned out. I wear it with a strappy top underneath for modesty and hope not to be caught out in too much sunshine without sunscreen therefore avoiding an all over dappled sun tan!
Now back to a previous and a new knitting project. Never have just one craft on the go!

Oh my goodness that is a lovely piece! Oh and the title of your post gave me a laugh. Oh yes I could see the importance of something underneath that top for modesty! 🙂

It looks great! I’ve crocheted two jumpers in the past but not been fond of either really. I do want to try make a lose top like you’ve done sometime though. Just need to actually find a pattern and get enough yarn to make it!

I have knitted various tops that I never liked – but several that I have liked too. Kind of difficult when you can’t try on as you go – or in my case some things take so long that I go off them!

Yeah, I have this thing where I prefer the feel of knit wear over crochet but I prefer actually crocheting and also it’s easier to try on crochet as you go because you’re not dealing with needles and cables. Also, I’d love a fine knit jumper but damn that would take me forever to knit!

I think maybe you are right about being able to try crochet on as you go – it worked this time for me – when it felt too small I just did more rounds. The added bonus of crochet is that if you rip back there’s only one ‘stick’ and one ‘stitch’ at a time to cope with and not a whole long row of stitches to pick back up again when you start again.

Yup, picking up stitches with knitting is a nightmare for me – to be honest, I live with a constant underlying fear with knitting that stitches are going to accidentally slide off my needles and everything will be ruined! It’s so much less stressful with crochet and just minding that one stitch!

The only hints I have ever been given is if knitted stitches fall off in a row, try to pick them up with a smaller gauge needle. But yes, one stick and one stitch is simpler by far!

Love your new top! It is so summery and beautiful 🙂 Sometimes it’s nice to have these really open lacy pieces to cover up tank tops or similar – a little bit more modest without adding a lot of heat 🙂

that’s very pretty, i like the colour too. i’ve still got a few summer tops to sew up, but I’m thinking i might do a small project. I knitted a pair of socks for the first time last year which where a tiny bit too big for me (I’m a size 4) and I gave them to my mum, who wore them all the time because made from wool, they were lovely and warm. I have more sock wool, so I think I’ll try again, make her another pair for chrimbo!

Thank you. I love to have the odd small project between bigger ones. Good luck with your next socks and sewing up the tops. A friend once made all her family/friends socks for Christmas – 26 pairs in all !

Thank you Olivia. The success of this one inspired me to try another crochet project when I was on holiday mid August – I thought I could learn a new technique again. Sadly it was a bit of a disaster – I really must learn to walk before I run. Still, happy this coral top worked at least.
