A little sparkle can continue into the New Year

Posted on

For many people the start of any New Year is difficult. Loved ones are missed and despite good intentions, new plans can be challenging to make. 2021 is harder than ever for some. The coronavirus pandemic has affected people in different ways, some of which are truly devastating. Whilst we all continue to try to stay safe, we stay home and socially distance when out, we try to look forward to the end of all the restrictions and traumas around the world.

As we know here in the UK, January can also be a dark, dull month. Today it hasn’t stopped raining for hours, the second in a row. The Christmas decorations have been packed away, we’ve eaten or given away all the extra treats we had in, we’ve thought about diet and exercise plans (thought about, not always activated). However there can still be room for just a little bit of sparkle, can’t there?

Trying to keep busy, my next knitting project will be with these. I reckon if I finish the jumper I can wear it all year round. Glitter is not just for Christmas!

The sewing machine has to come out too. A family member is soon to have her 2nd birthday and I am working on a gift for her. Here’s the start of a quilt for a little rag doll. I’ll show and tell when both have been finished, if they come out well. I think I am better at sewing small projects right now (and always to tell the truth), my knitting successes are definitely more satisfying.

I enjoy reading about other people’s current crafting. What’s everyone’s next creative plans? Am here to admire and be in awe!

I love those greens. Yes, I would definitely wear it all year round.

I love a lot of green – looking in my wardrobe! Think I may play yarn chicken though …. have dived into the new project and might have enough for back and front and one sleeve of a sweater! Now thinking might have made an error of judgement here …..

I had a phase last summer of mask making – you need a break!

My new Singer sewing machine has made it to the table but not brave enough to use it yet. I used to see but it’s been years.missing the freedom of crafting and making absolutely anything I want. Your patchwork will be lovely.

Thank you for your encouragement. Good luck with the new machine. How about something being brave over the weekend and giving a sew a go ? I don’t admit to making anything difficult – I let the fabric make it look good and don’t show people any seams!

Your on…I will this weekend. It will solve a lot of problems I have like a draughty doorway needs a curtain, the duck house needs draught panels to be hung.. so need to add ties, a blanket to repair, chicken jackets to make…its endless. I studied sewing at school and remember the lessons on seems and accurate sewing so may just spend a day on technical and tensions and stitches. Better go and measure Pickle..he chicken jacket is very tasty. She nibbles the tail end so it’s all frayed…but at least she has a tail now. I may just post about her as she deserves a mention! Stay safe. X

That is some nice sparkly yarn and I hope it helps brighten your January. I was just reading the post of another UK blogging buddy and she was talking about the gloom too. I like the fabric in the quilt you are working on!

Thank you tierneycreates. It has been a gloomy few days. If I see sunshine and palm trees on anything on tv or in a magazine I start to dream …

Very cute quilt start, and big YES to the sparkle, especially at this time of the year! It is super gloomy here too, but brighter days are on their way – we are making our very slow and laborious way to spring ๐Ÿ™‚ I am knitting a bunch – diagonal striped scarf and mobius cowl are both moving along!

Thank you quiteayarnblog. The quilt is still in pieces ….. have been busy knitting sparkly – but think I might be heading for yarn chicken, not sure I have enough to finish my project!!! Look forward to seeing your scarf and cowl when completed x

Sparkly yarn and little quilts, the perfect antidote for gloomy January. I’m currently planning a seat cover, curtains and crochet blanket all for Tilly.

Ooh that green yarn is lovely. I have a sparkly green jumper that comes out at Christmas but has been making some appearances in this gloomy January too. But it is really quite sparkly, yours looks like it will be a bit more subtle and better for year-round appearances.

Thank you – currently thinking I’ll be playing yarn chicken – think I am a couple of balls short of Rico Creative Reflection Print in Shade 10 – should you know anyone who has some in their stash that I could buy off them! I have knitted so far I am reluctant to undo what I’ve done!!

Oooh, green yarn and sparkles – perfect for brightening up dark January days! This time of year is made for knitting, so enjoy ๐Ÿ˜Š Your little quilt is very cute too and I’m sure the recipient will love it.

Thank you. I agree, good time of year to indulge in knitting and tv box sets! I have posted off the dolly and quilt, so guess I’ll hear how they were received over the next few days – last time I sent handmade gifts I had videos of toddlers wearing the items I made and one little girl jumping up and down hugging her new cushion saying ‘thank you Auntie Tina, you’re the best’ – it made my day!

I’d say so! Praise from kids is the best because you know it’s genuine – if they don’t like something they’ve no problem telling you ๐Ÿ˜‚ Happy crafting!

True. Love their innocence but glad they eventually learn subtlety!
